The Nantan City Fireworks Festival will be held on September 20, 2026, along the Oi River (Katsura River) in Yagi-cho, Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture. Marking the milestone 80th edition of the event, approximately 3,000 fireworks will be launched—an increase of about 1,000 from last year.
The festival began in 1947 with the aim of honoring those who perished in World War II and promoting local commerce and industry.
A highlight of the event is the "Niagara" set-piece display, featuring a cascade of sparks stretching about 200 meters that creates a beautiful reflection on the river's surface. A drone show will also take place prior to the fireworks.
The venue will host dance performances—including Yosakoi—as well as a musical performance by violinist Naoko Matsumoto and a floating lantern ceremony.
The executive committee, comprising the Nantan City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Nantan City government, stated, "As this is the 80th festival, we have prepared special features for both the drone show and the fireworks. We hope everyone comes to enjoy it."
The food stall area opens at 3:00 p.m., and various performances begin at 5:00 p.m. The fireworks display starts at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. In the event of severe weather, the festival will be postponed to September 22.
