Ms. Anzu Ishizaki (29 years old), who runs a photo studio in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, has been selected to serve as the *Saiku-dai* (proxy for the Imperial Princess who served at Ise Grand Shrine) in the "Saiku Procession" held in October. This event recreates the procession of an Imperial Princess traveling from Kyoto to Ise Grand Shrine (in Ise City, Mie Prefecture). On September 1, she attended a costume fitting at Nonomiya Shrine in Ukyo Ward, where she revealed her stunning appearance in the traditional attire.
The *Saiku* was an unmarried Imperial Princess who served Ise Grand Shrine on behalf of the Emperor. Because a purification site where the *Saiku* cleansed herself is believed to have existed near Nonomiya Shrine, a local preservation society began recreating the procession in 1999.
Ms. Ishizaki was born and raised in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, and has operated the "Arashiyama Photo Studio" in front of JR Saga-Arashiyama Station since 2021. Last year, she competed in a beauty pageant in Los Angeles, USA. She has reportedly been honing her gaze and movements to convey the beauty and strength of a woman with a resolute spirit.
On this day, she participated in a photo session wearing a *junihitoe* (twelve-layered ceremonial kimono), featuring a sprout-green *karaginu* (short jacket) layered over *itsutsuginu* (five-layered robes). Her calm and composed demeanor drew the attention of tourists.
"I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this role at a place that holds precious memories with my family," she said with a smile. "I want to present an image that is dignified and strong, yet also warm."
The Saiku Procession will depart from Nonomiya Shrine at noon on October 18.
