Following the selection of Keifuku Electric Railroad’s (Randen) new "KYOTRAM" (Mobo 1 series) model for the 2026 Blue Ribbon Award—an honor bestowed upon outstanding railway vehicles—an award ceremony was held on September 11, 2026, at Randen’s Arashiyama Station in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. This marked the first time Keifuku Electric Railroad has received the award, and those involved celebrated the remarkable achievement together.
Established in 1958, the Blue Ribbon Award is presented to the vehicle deemed best by a selection committee, based on votes cast by members of the Japan Railfan Club, an organization for railway enthusiasts. The KYOTRAM features a retro design with a rounded front and is finished in "Kyoto Purple," a color characteristic of the Randen line. It is equipped with multilingual displays and bucket-style seats designed with a recessed center for greater comfort. Out of 11 candidate vehicles, it secured first place, capturing 40% of the vote.
Approximately 50 people attended the ceremony, which was celebrated in grand style with the cracking of a ceremonial *kusudama* (celebratory ball) and the unveiling of a commemorative headmark. President Norio Otsuka reflected on the project, stating, "We decided to introduce this as our flagship vehicle because we felt we were at a turning point regarding whether streetcars would continue to be needed in the city of Kyoto. Our staff did a magnificent job realizing a vehicle that is both user-friendly and beautifully designed. I am incredibly proud."
The KYOTRAM was introduced in February 2025, marking Keifuku Electric Railroad’s first new vehicle in 24 years. Three units are currently in operation, with plans to bring the total fleet to seven by the end of the 2028 fiscal year.
