"Arashiyama Tsuki-toro" (Arashiyama Moonlit Path), an event featuring illuminated bamboo groves in the Saga-Arashiyama area of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, begins on September 30, 2026. Now in its second year, the initiative aims to generate revenue by leveraging local tourism assets and use the proceeds to address regional issues. Green bamboo stalks reaching toward the sky and bamboo decorations are illuminated, standing out against the darkness of the night. The event runs until November 8.

The Arashiyama Tsukitouro venue, opened to local residents during a pre-opening event. Lights illuminating the bamboo and a mist create a magical atmosphere.

Tsuki-toro is organized by an executive committee comprising groups such as the Arashiyama Hoshokai (Arashiyama Preservation Society) and the Saga Neighborhood Association Federation, serving as a successor to the former "Arashiyama Hanatoro" event. Last year, the event attracted approximately 63,000 visitors, and the proceeds were used for projects such as repairing bamboo-twig fences in the groves and supporting local festivals.

The light spilling from the holes in the bamboo catches the eyes of visitors.

This year, the venue covers an area of approximately 6,600 square meters—about 1.7 times the size of last year's venue. In addition to the main "bamboo grove walking path," the event has expanded to include an adjacent bamboo grove across the road. Approximately 10,000 bamboo decorations have been set up.

Some visitors at the venue remarked that it looked like Princess Kaguya might appear.

A preview opening for local residents was held from September 27 to 29. Amidst mist generated by special equipment and soft light enveloping the bamboo groves, visitors captured photos and videos of the magical scenery.

We aim to preserve and utilize local resources, harmonize residents' lives with tourism, and pass on our culture to the next generation."

The event runs from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (last entry at 8:30 PM). Same-day tickets are 1,500 yen (free for elementary school students and younger), though sales may be suspended due to entry restrictions. Online tickets guaranteeing entry are 2,000 yen.
