On December 4, 2023, at Minamiza in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, the December tradition of ''Kagai Soken'', where geisha and maiko from the geisha district watch Kaomise performances, began. This year, it was also the performance to announce the succession of Danjuro Ichikawa Hakuen, who was renamed Ebizo, and the maiko and others, wearing hairpins shaped like ''maneki,'' turned their attention to the stage.
This is an annual event in Kyoto's Gokagai district, where geisha and maiko learn performing arts such as dance and shamisen through Kabuki performances.
On this day, 50 geisha and maiko from Gion Kobu came to the event in all their costumes. Maneki signboards were put up and people entered from the front of the Minami-za, which was crowded with people. People lined up in rows at the box seats and watched the performances and movements of Danjuro Ichikawa, his eldest son Shinnosuke Ichikawa, and others.
