The 150th dance performance of Kyoto's red-light district, Gion Kobu, since its inception in 1872, ''Miyako Odori,'' will begin on April 1, 2024 at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. The previous day, March 31st, geishas and maikos showed off the results of their training at the Ozarae, where invited guests were invited.
This year's program is ''The Tale of Genji Maiougi'' (8 views in total). It is based on a work premiered in 1955, with lyrics written by Isamu Yoshii, a poet closely connected to Gion.
At the beginning, maiko wearing matching asagi-colored costumes appeared from the flower path on both sides of the stage to the chant of "Miyako Odori wa Yoiyasaa." She danced gorgeously in front of the traditional silver fusuma sliding door, announcing the opening of the event. In addition to the elegant scene where Genji meets the Yugao-no-kimi from the Tale of Genji, and the scene where Rokujo no Mishudokoro becomes a living spirit, there is a scene depicting the sadness of the spirit, as well as seasonal scenes such as Oharano Shrine in autumn leaves and a Kaburenjo in full bloom. Geisha and maiko danced to Nagauta and shamisen music.
Maiko Maya (20 years old), who will be performing for the third time this year, said, ''She likes the Miyako Odori costume, and she has been practicing so that she will not forget her original intention even for the third time.'' She was talking about her feelings towards the stage.
