Acceptance of New Year's cards for 2024 began on December 15, 2023. A commemorative ceremony was held at the Kyoto Central Post Office in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, with geishas, maikos, and kindergarten children.
Children from Tokiwa Kindergarten (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City) and geishas and maikos from Miyagawa Town participated. They watched as a carrier disguised as a station staff member retrieved the New Year's cards that each person had posted. Geisha Kanoko and maiko Kanotomo performed a dance and asked, ''Please send out your New Year's cards as soon as possible.''
In order to deliver New Year's cards on New Year's Day, they must be mailed by December 25th. The Kyoto Central Post Office says, ''We want New Year's cards to deliver warmth that digital cards cannot.''
