On October 11, 2026, the "Yowatari" ritual (featuring the *Awata Daitoro*—massive illuminated floats) of the Awata Festival took place in the area surrounding Awata Shrine in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward; the illuminated floats paraded through the neighborhoods of parishioners across Higashiyama and Sakyo Wards. The *Daitoro* have a long history and are said to be the precursor to the famous Nebuta (or Neputa) festivals of Aomori.
These massive floats are crafted by students from Kyoto University of the Arts, with about half of the designs reportedly being replaced each year.
