The ''Gion Shirakawa Evening Cherry Blossom Light-up'' is being held around Gion Shinbashi in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, where the rows of cherry blossom trees are illuminated at night. Due to the delay in cherry blossom blooming this year, the event period will be extended by one week until April 7, 2024.
The light-up event is sponsored by an executive committee made up of local neighborhood associations and shops, and is now in its third year since being suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to illuminating approximately 40 Yoshino cherry trees and weeping cherry trees along Shirakawa Minami-dori with spotlights, Andon has also been set up along Shinbashi-dori and Nawate-dori.
Only the illumination of Shirakawa Minami-dori will be extended. Toshiro Akiyama, the organizer of the executive committee, said, ''Sometimes people sit on the railings and bamboo fences of Tatsumi Bridge, but I hope they don't do that because it will cause damage.I hope people can enjoy the atmosphere of Gion and the cherry blossoms while observing good manners.'' The lights will be on from 6pm to 10pm.
