At around 11:45 a.m. on April 23, 2024, a police officer called 119 saying, ''A man is trapped under a fallen tree and cannot move.'' on Sannenzaka in Shimizu, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. According to the Kyoto City Fire Department and the Kyoto Prefectural Police Higashiyama Station, a 62-year-old Japanese tourist appears to have been crushed under the wreckage and suffered injuries, but is said to be conscious.

According to Kyoto Prefectural Police Higashiyama Police Station, the fallen cherry tree was about 9 meters tall and 1.7 meters around the trunk. It collapsed, blocking the road at Sanneizaka, a tourist attraction.
