An art piece using potted hydrangeas entitled "The Love Between Murasaki Shikibu and Michinaga" has been unveiled at Mimuroto Temple in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, known as the "Temple of Flowers." The vivid colors are eye-catching under the rainy skies, delighting worshippers.

This is the fourth year for the hydrangea art, and this year it is in honor of the NHK historical drama "To You, the Shining One," which depicts the life of Murasaki Shikibu. The temple grounds are home to the remains of the Ukifune chapter of the Tale of Genji's Uji Chapter, and the head priest is a member of the Fujiwara clan, so the temple has a connection to the drama.
Around 800 potted hydrangeas in five colors - red, blue, white, purple, and pink - have been lined up in front of the large stone steps. The art piece is about 10 meters long and 5 meters wide, and depicts Murasaki Shikibu's back, hiding her face with a fan, and a heart representing Michinaga. It is said to depict a love story based on the theory that the two were intimate.
The head priest, Mitsuyasu Itami, said, "I hope you will enjoy it while thinking about the Tale of Genji and other dramas." The statue will be installed until June 1st. An admission fee is required.
