Among the floats of the Gion Festival, which are described as "moving art museums," the Funahoko (Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Shinmachi-dori Aya-koji-shita) held a "Shinmen-Aratame" (Divine Mask Check) ceremony to check the safety of the oldest decorations at the town hall on July 3, 2024. With solemn gestures, the members of the Funahoko Preservation Society held up the mask of the deity, which was kept in a wooden box.
Of the items worn by the deity of Empress Jingu in military uniform, the Funahoko has preserved and passed down the original mask made during the Bun'an era of the Muromachi period and a copy from the Edo period. Outside of the Gion Festival period, the two new and old masks are kept securely in a safe outside the town hall.
