Ahead of the Kaomise performance at Minamiza (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City), which lights up Kyoto's December season, the ''maneki-kaki'' event, in which the names of the actors who will be performing are written in ink on signboards, is underway. On the morning of November 6, 2023, the name of Danjuro Ichikawa (45 years old), formerly known as Ebizo, was announced with great force as he announced his succession at Kaomise.
This is the first time in 11 years that a copy of Danjuro, a famous Edo Kabuki performer, has been written, since 2012, which was his last stage performance. The names of Arata Danjuro's eldest son, Shinnosuke Ichikawa (10 years old), and his eldest daughter, Botan Ichikawa (12 years old), were also written on the sign.
There are examples of female imitation signboards before and after the war, such as when Tamao Nakamura (84 years old), the eldest daughter of the second generation Ganjiro Nakamura, appeared at the Kano Kaomise in 1948 at the age of 9, but Botan has been in charge for half a century. That's it for the first time.
