On November 1, 2025, Kenninji Temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward will begin an event to illuminate its grounds with projection mapping and light displays at night. A preview was held on October 31, showcasing the gardens and buildings in a fantastical display of digital art.
The event is being produced by TEAM FIRE, a group of companies and other organizations that utilize cutting-edge technology to further enhance the appeal of traditional culture.
The garden's projection mapping utilizes the white sand, pine trees, and the tiled roof of the Buddhist lecture hall behind it as screens. Amid the sound of rain, abstract images of changing colors were projected, expressing the world of Zen.
Using cutting-edge 3D holograms, art features patterns that appear and disappear in the air, and one area creates mist in the garden, resembling a sea of clouds, and is illuminated in a fantastical way.
The event will run until November 8, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (5:30 PM on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th). 2,000 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
