A passenger car crashed into "Tosu," a wooden structure designated as an important cultural property, in the precincts of Tofuku-ji Temple, 15 Honmachi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, at around 9:30 a.m. on October 17. The driver is a 30-year-old male employee of an organization, who lives in the same ward. According to Tofuku-ji Temple, "Tosu" is a Zen temple latrine. That temple's Tosu was built in the early Muromachi period, and is the oldest and largest existing in Japan, although it is no longer in use. No one was injured in the accident.

The Higashiyama Police Department and Tofuku-ji Temple said that the car was turning around when it backed into the doorway of Tosu. It smashed the wooden double doors and entered the interior of the building. Reportedly, the driver said that he "mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal" while the gear was in reverse.
