The World Heritage site Byodo-in Temple (Uji, Uji, Kyoto Prefecture) will be open to special night-time visitors from November 16, 2024. The temple grounds will be lit up, and the Phoenix Hall, a national treasure that represents the Pure Land, will be illuminated in the autumn night with light-emitting diode (LED) lighting that is close to natural light.
The Phoenix Hall was bathed in soft LED light during a media event on November 14. It was reflected in the pond, and the contrast with the still green maple leaves created a fantastic atmosphere. The head priest, Kamui Fumiaki, said, "I hope that people can enjoy the same view that people in the Heian period saw in the gentle light."
The special night-time visit will be held on Saturdays and Sundays until December 1. The hours are from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Visitors can apply in advance by going to the reservation site from the official website. Tickets cost 1,500 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for elementary, junior high, and high school students.
