On October 16, 2026, the Council for Cultural Affairs submitted a recommendation to Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Yoshihiro Seki to designate "lifestyle culture"—a new category added to the list of Important Intangible Cultural Properties for the first time in approximately 70 years—to encompass *rikka* (a traditional style of *ikebana* flower arrangement) and *kyo-ryori* (specifically *kaiseki* cuisine). The Council further recommended that Senei Ikenobo (93 years old)—head of the Ikenobo school of *ikebana*—and Eiichi Takahashi (87 years old)—proprietor of the historic *ryotei* (traditional restaurant) Hyotei—both based in Kyoto, be recognized as the designated holders of these cultural properties (informally known as "Living National Treasures").
