On May 5, 2025, the traditional Kamo Horse Race, held prior to the Aoi Matsuri (Aoi Festival), was held at Kamigamo Shrine, a World Heritage Site in Kita Ward, Kyoto City. Five pairs of two horses, a total of ten horses, galloped briskly through the approximately 200-meter riding grounds set up within the shrine grounds, praying for peace in the world and bountiful harvests.
Kamo horse racing is said to have originally been held at the Kyoto Imperial Palace and was moved to Kamigamo Shrine in 1093 during the Heian period, making it the oldest traditional horse racing event in Japan.
