Ayatokunaka Shrine (Minami Ward, Kyoto City) announced on June 15, 2024 that Komada Soushi (11 years old), a fifth-grader at Ikenoue Elementary School in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, has been selected as the "Kuze Komagata Chigo," who will lead the mikoshi (portable shrine) on horseback during the Gion Festival's Shinko Festival (July 17) and Kanko Festival (July 24).
Up until now, two Kuze Komagata Chigo have been selected as a rule, but this year, due to factors such as the declining birthrate, only one will be selected.
