The autumn dance performance "Onshukai" of Gion Kobu, one of Kyoto's geisha districts, will begin on October 1, 2025, at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. The "Ozarae" performance, which marks the final stage of rehearsals, will be held on September 30, with the geisha and maiko performing on stage dressed in the same attire as they will wear in the actual performance.

Maiko perform the Natori-gasa dance in large formal attire before the training session (September 30th, Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City)

Unlike the spring "Miyako Odori," which features new works, the Onshukai will feature geisha and maiko showcasing their daily training in traditional Kyoto dance, focusing on pieces from the Inoue school of Kyoto dance. This year, 76 geisha, maiko, and local performers will be performing.

The Ozarae performance will begin with eight maiko singing the Kamigata song "Natori Gasa." After the dancers completed the entire routine, holding flower hats decorated with chrysanthemums, Living National Treasure Yachiyo Inoue (68) and others gave detailed instruction on each dancer's movements, posture, hand positioning, and more.

Maiko Maho (17 years old), making her stage debut, said, "I'm nervous, but I'll do my best not to be a burden to my older sisters," while maiko Asuha (20 years old) said, "I've been practicing hard for this day. I hope many people will come and see it."

The performance will feature 12 diverse pieces, with six pieces performed each day.

The show will run until October 6th, starting at 4:00 PM each day. First prize is 10,000 yen, second prize is 8,000 yen, and third prize is 6,000 yen. Gion Kobu Kabu Kai, phone number 075-561-1115.
