The production announcement and program photos for the spring performance of "Kyoto Dance" in Miyagawacho, one of Kyoto's geisha districts, took place on February 24, 2026, at the Miyagawacho Kaburenjo in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. The opening is on April 4, marking the first time the performance will be held at the new Kaburenjo, which was completed in 2025. It will be the first local performance in five years, since 2021, before the reconstruction.
The program will feature "Miyako Furisode Hajime" (8 scenes), featuring a total of 48 geisha and maiko. After opening with "Hashiradate," a dance performed by geisha in black crested kimono accompanied by a maiko's shamisen, the performance will take you into the world of mythology. A dynamic group dance depicts a princess facing off against the shape-shifting giant snake, Susanoo.
The second half of the show is set in the world of Kyoto's dyeing and weaving, with the love expressed in colorful rolls of fabric in an elegant performance. The finale is the traditional "Miyagawa Ondo," in which geisha and maiko perform a spectacular dance using the runways on both sides of the stage.
A total of 34 geisha and maiko participated in the shoot, dressed in their performance costumes. Poses were carefully checked and each scene was photographed. Geisha Fukuyoshi said, "I'm excited that Kyo Odori has returned to the Kaburenjo, and it feels like spring has finally arrived. I hope many people will come and see it."
The "Kyo Odori" will run from April 4th to 19th (no performance on April 13th). There are two performances each day, at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
