On the morning of March 10, 2026, a strong cold front brought a return of cold weather to Kyoto City's "inner sanctuary" mountain village, bringing a full-scale snowfall and a blanket of snow, as if we had gone back to mid-winter.
In Hanasebessho-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, a mountain village located at an altitude of 600 meters and about 17 kilometers north of central Kyoto, 10 to 15 centimeters of snow had accumulated since the previous night by around 7:00 AM. Homes and fields were completely covered in snow, and the steady snowfall created a silver world reminiscent of a sumi-e painting.
On the morning of March 10, large flakes of "lingering snow" fell in Kurama, Ohara, and Kifune in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, which are relatively close to the city center, leaving the main gate of Kurama Temple and other areas lightly dusted with snow.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, chilly temperatures will remain until around March 13, but temperatures will rise above average after that. Information that the cherry blossoms have bloomed may arrive in late March.
