Shipments of "Hoonji bamboo shoots," a specialty of Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, have reached their peak. This year, high temperatures in early spring led to rapid growth, and farmers are busy with morning harvesting and shipping.
Hoonji bamboo shoots are characterized by their tenderness and low bitterness. Currently, 40 households produce them. Harvest yields vary every other year, and this year is an "off-year" with a smaller harvest, so the target collection volume is 10 tons, 8 tons less than last year.
At the collection center in Hoonji, Fukuchiyama City, farmers have been busy sorting and packing the bamboo shoots they dug up since 6 a.m. Kazunori Noda (71 years old), representative of the Hoonji bamboo shoot production group, said, "This year, there are many well-shaped shoots. We hope people will enjoy the fresh taste in sashimi or tempura."
Shipments will continue until around the end of April. The Saga Bamboo Shoot Village Festival will be held at Saga Kaikan (Kisaichi, Fukuchiyama City) from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on April 19, 2026, to promote the seasonal delicacy.
