A historical procession recreating the costumes of the "Oharame," women who sold firewood and brushwood in the streets of Kyoto, was held on April 29, 2026, in Ohara, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. In a village dazzling with fresh greenery and rapeseed blossoms, women in kimonos and headscarves marched in a procession, attracting the attention of tourists.
This is an annual event of the Ohara Tourism Preservation Association, with approximately 80 participants, including members of the public and children from the local Kyoto Ohara Academy.
The group, dressed in three different costumes from the Muromachi to Taisho periods, departed from Jakkoin Temple, associated with the Tale of the Heike, shortly after 1 PM. Wearing red sashes and aprons and straw sandals, they headed towards Sanzenin and Shorinin temples, approximately 2 kilometers away.
The day was cloudy and the weather was cool. Kyoko Machida (46 years old), a local pastry chef who participated for the first time with her two daughters, said, "It was more comfortable walking than I expected. It's very refreshing and fun."
