At around 9:15 a.m. on February 16, an excavator carried on a large truck hit the edge of the eaves of the South Main Gate of Tofukuji Temple at 15 Hommachi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, as it attempted to pass through the gate. The Higashiyama Police Station of Kyoto Prefectural Police reported that a roof rafter of the gate suffered a 10-centimeter-wide abrasion. According to the Kyoto Prefectural Government, the South Main Gate was built in the Momoyama Period and is designated as a tangible cultural property by the prefecture. No one was injured. The police are investigating the case as a property damage accident.
