On the night of October 12, 2023, a trial lighting ceremony was held at Torin-in Temple, the sub-temple of Myoshin-ji Temple in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, for a special nighttime viewing, ''A Society to Get Closer to the Bonto Lights.'' In the grounds of a Zen temple where the sounds of insects echoed, candle flames flickered in the cool breeze.
Approximately 800 ''Bonto'' and ''andon'' tile lighting with candles handmade by Chief Priest Genbo Nishikawa (age 84) were lined up in the shrine grounds. In the garden in front of the shoin, the Zen word ''Banri Seifu no Aki,'' which means ''Once you acquire a state of mind that is unfettered by anything, a clean breeze will naturally blow into your heart,'' was expressed using lights. .
Special night viewings have been held every fall since 1999. Chief Priest Nishikawa says, ''I hope people see the light and feel refreshed and free from earthly desires.''
Special viewing will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm from October 13th to 22nd (registration closes at 8:30 pm). Admission fee: 700 yen.
