The Gion Festival's Shinko Festival was held in the center of Kyoto City on the night of July 17, 2024. Three portable shrines carrying the deities gathered in front of Yasaka Shrine in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and after the carriers chanted bravely, they paraded through the parishioners' area.
A little after 6 p.m., the three portable shrines gathered at the foot of the stone steps of Yasaka Shrine. The carriers performed the "sashiage" by holding the portable shrines high, swaying them to the rhythm of "hoit, hoit," and ringing the decorative metal fittings.
The portable shrines departed one after another, traveling through the Gion area, Kawaramachi Street, and other areas on their own routes. At the Shijo Kawaramachi intersection in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, they performed the "tsuji-mawashi," going around the four corners and getting very close to the audience.
The portable shrines entered Shijo Otabisho (Shijo-dori Teramachi Higashi-iru, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City) around 10 p.m. It returns to Yasaka Shrine for the Kanko Festival on July 24th.
