On September 9, 2025, a "Crow Sumo" event was held at Kamigamo Shrine, a World Heritage Site in Kita Ward, Kyoto City, in conjunction with the Choyo Shinto ritual. Local boys offered up sumo wrestling in the form of a "Crow Sumo" performance. Amid the lingering heat of summer, the children energetically competed against each other in the shrine grounds, watched over by Aya Yamauchi (25), the Saio-dai (deputy) for the Aoi Festival. In front of a cone-shaped pile of sand called "Tatesuna," two parishioners dressed in white robes hopped sideways like crows, imitating their cries of "Ka-ka-ka" and "Koo-ko-ko." Afterwards, the crow sumo performance was offered on a specially constructed sumo ring.
