Around 3:30 p.m. on August 11, 2023, a woman in her 50s who was near a mountain trail in Shugakuin, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City called 110 to report that she had been attacked by a bear. According to the Kyoto Prefectural Police Shimogamo Police Station, the woman suffered injuries to her ears and hands, but her life was not in danger.
According to the Kyoto Prefectural Police Shimogamo Police Station and the Kyoto Municipal Fire Department, the scene was about 1.5 kilometers east of Shugakuin Imperial Villa, near the Higashiyama course of the Kyoto Round Trail. A trail running woman is believed to have been attacked by a bear in the mountains. A male climber heard her calling for help and rescued her to the trail.
From the evening of August 11, the Sakyo Ward Office contacted the community association, schools, nursery schools, etc. of the Shugakuin school district, and will set up a warning sign on the mountain trail on August 12.
