The founding of Kyoto City University of Arts (Shimogyo Ward) began in 1880 as the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School. Since then, the university has evolved into the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, and then the more specialized Municipal Painting College, producing talented artists who will lead the Kyoto art world. The special exhibition at the Kyocera Museum of Art, Kyoto, entitled "The School of Masters: How Masterpieces of Japanese Painting were Born," selects 47 representative Japanese painters from the school, including faculty members, and conveys the value of the "school" through a total of 128 works.
