The early summer tradition of "Kyoto Takigi Noh" began on June 1, 2025, at Heian Shrine in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. This year, due to renovation work on the shrine building, the stage was arranged in the opposite direction from usual, and four Noh and Kyogen works related to Kyoto were performed with the Otenmon Gate in the background.

A mysterious and profound performance unfolded against the backdrop of the vermilion-painted Otenmon Gate at the Kyoto Takigi Noh Festival (June 1st, Heian Shrine, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City)

Organized by the Kyoto Noh Association and Kyoto City. Approximately 1,400 people filled the seats in the temple grounds. The theme of this year's performance was "A Mysterious Journey in and around Kyoto." The performance opened with "Hashibenkei," which depicts the encounter between master and servant Ushiwakamaru and Benkei at Gojo Bridge.

The performance, with the Otenmon Gate floating in the dark night as a backdrop, captivated the audience at the Kyoto Takigi Noh (June 1st, Heian Shrine, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City)

As evening turned to night, bonfires and lights were lit, and the stage and the vermilion-painted gate stood out in the twilight. Following "Kocho" and the Noh play "Higer Yagura," the festival concluded with "Toru," in which the spirit of Minamoto Toru, who is said to be the model for Hikaru Genji in the Tale of Genji, dances and reminisces about the glory days.

The June 2nd festival will also begin at 6pm. Four plays will be performed, including "Arashiyama" and "Raiden." There is a fee. Call Kyoto anytime at 075 (661) 3755.
