In response to the increase in foreign tourists, the Kyoto Prefectural Police have created stickers to clearly explain to foreigners how to use push-button traffic lights. They will be installed at all 562 locations in Kyoto Prefecture.

Stickers instructing foreigners on how to use push-button traffic lights (Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City)

According to the Kyoto Prefectural Police, the stickers were devised in response to cases where foreigners who did not know how to use push-button traffic lights at crosswalks were confused by the fact that the lights never changed.

The stickers are 38 cm long and 10 cm wide. To make it easy to understand regardless of language differences, the illustrations show that pressing the button changes the light.

When the stickers were placed on a push-button traffic light in front of the gate of Ninna-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, foreigners who saw the illustrations were able to smoothly press the button and cross the crosswalk. The Traffic Regulation Division is calling on people to "use the lights correctly and cross the road safely, without ignoring traffic lights."
