江戸時代の1701（元禄14）年4月21日、江戸城内で、赤穂藩の藩主・浅野長矩（内匠頭）が、旗本・吉良義央（上野介）に対して背後から重傷を負わせた事件があった。将軍・徳川綱吉の命令で、浅野長矩は切腹、赤穂藩は没収となった。
これを不服とした赤穂藩の家臣・大石内蔵助以下47名が、1702（元禄15）年12月14日に吉良義央邸を襲い、仇討ちを果たした。その間、大石内蔵助が京都・山科の地に隠棲した史実にちなみ、毎年12月14日に京都市山科区で「山科義士まつり」が開かれている。

On April 21, 1701, during the Edo period, within Edo Castle, Asano Naganori (Takumi no Kami), the lord of the Ako domain, seriously injured Kira Yoshinaka (Kozuke no Suke), a hatamoto (samurai retainer). On the orders of Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, Asano Naganori committed seppuku and the Ako domain was confiscated.
Dissatisfied with this, 47 retainers of the Ako domain, including Oishi Kuranosuke, attacked Kira Yoshinaka's residence on December 14, 1702, to exact revenge. During this time, the Yamashina Gishi Festival is held every year on December 14th in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City, in commemoration of the historical fact that Oishi Kuranosuke retired to Yamashina, Kyoto.

에도시대의 1701(모토로쿠 14)년 4월 21일, 에도성내에서, 아카호번의 번주·아사노 나가사키(우치노우토)가, 기모토·요시라 요시오(우에노스케)에 대해 배후로부터 중상을 입힌 사건이 있었다. 장군·도쿠가와 츠나요시의 명령으로, 아사노 나가사키는 절복, 아카호번은 몰수가 되었다.
이를 불복으로 한 아카호번의 가신·오오이시 내장 조 이하 47명이, 1702(원록 15)년 12월 14일에 요시라 요시오 저택을 덮쳐, 싸움을 완수했다. 그동안 오오이시 내장 조가 교토·산과의 땅에 은거한 사실에 연관되어 매년 12월 14일에 교토시 산과구에서 '산과의사 축제'가 열리고 있다.
