茅の輪くぐりは、1年の前半のけがれをはらって暑い夏を無事に乗り越えられるように願う「夏越（なごし）の祓（はらえ）」の神事の一つ。夏の風物詩として知られ、北野天満宮では祭神の菅原道真の誕生日の6月25日に合わせて設置している。6月30日まで。

This ritual is part of the "Nagoshi no Harae" (Summer Purification Ceremony), which seeks to cleanse the impurities accumulated during the first half of the year and pray for a safe passage through the hot summer months. Known as a seasonal tradition, the large grass ring is installed at Kitano Tenmangu to coincide with June 25, the birthday of the shrine's enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane. It will remain in place until June 30.
